Focused on diversity and the advancement of opportunities for women, Working Mother Magazine has chosen 20 companies for its 2008 Best Companies for Multicultural Women. American Express, Ernst & Young, General Mills, IBM, and Pricewaterhouse-Coopers topped the list.
In its sixth annual diversity study, Working Mother Magazine provides an in-depth look at the companies that are leading the way toward diversity in the workplace.
The selection of the 2008 Best Companies was based on a detailed application completed by each company. Companies supplied 2007 data about the hiring, pay, and promotion of multicultural employees.
The application covered a wide variety of questions about a company's workforce, such as the number of women of color and women in top positions. It also included questions about programs for women of color, diversity activities, child care, elder care, and time off following childbirth.
This year's 20 Best Companies for Multicultural Women show a 49 percent increase in women who are senior managers. Women of color represented 13 percent of all new hires last year, 14 percent of all employees, and 7 percent of the top 20 earners at the winning firms.
"This generation is entering the workforce feeling the strongest bond with those in their age group, not necessarily the same gender or the same race of ethnicity," said Suzanne Riss, editor-in-chief of Working Mother. "Yet, they also don't want to check their cultural heritage at the door. They're interested in fast-tracking their careers, and want to bring their free-to-be-me sensibility to the workplace."
